CD track 04: “Always Her Own Girl” – Mya and Susan Hwang

Susan Hwang tells stories and makes collapsible things like songs and times. She plays accordion, janggu (Korean drum) and piano, but physical objects she can’t play, wear or eat intimidate her.

She’s the founder/producer of international, literature-inspired arts non-profit, The Bushwick Book Club. Not a great vacationer, she leaves NYC for theater and with bands like The Debutante Hour, Lusterlit, Soozee Hwang & The Relastics and King Missile Dog Fly Religion.

Susan plays accordions because they’re lighter than pianos (barely) and drums because it’s healthy for a girl to hit things.

In addition to accordions, things that excite Sasha are old friends, new friends, hot tea, fermented vegetables, cats, bike rides, and foggy weather.

She finds transcendence in folk dancing and only cares about art made by humans.

CD track 06: “Take Me to the Village” – Blind Lizard

Masha Mitkov is an artist based in Los Angeles, CA. She explores the psycho-spiritual portals existing between movement and music with Blind Lizard Balkan Band & Balkanoche.

Born in Ukraine, and raised in a Portland, OR curtain shop, Masha gravitated towards accordion at age 17 after encountering dueling accordions at a Russian Bard festival. Years of Soviet piano training, and playing woodwinds in school bands created a fertile ground for this obsession.

You might catch her playing the instrument upside-down on an aerial apparatus.

She holds a degree in Mathematics from Bard College and occasionally works in software and as a Location Sound Engineer.
