CD track 01: “Ponyland (Alternate Version)” — Welcome Wendy

Singer-songwriter and cabaret artist, Whitney Anne Fliss hails from Seattle, WA, where she studied musical theater at Cornish College of the Arts and the University of Washington.

In need of aerating herself from the damp Pacific Northwest, she set off to tour Europe and Australia with Ginn & Whiskey; an accordion and tap-dance duo which busked the city streets and played street art festivals. In 2017, Whitney Anne planted her roots in France where she continues to evolve her music career.

From country-soul to vintage rock ’n roll to acoustic-trance, she has three different music projects in Bordeaux: Whiskey Paradis, Welcome Wendy and Slowfest Orchestra.

MARCH
Calvaleigh Rasmussen
calvaleigh.rasmussen

CD track 09: “Roving Woman” – Cavaleigh Rsmussen

A California native, Calvaleigh recently moved her music to delightful Minnesota, land of the strong, good-looking, and above average. She plays dance tunes from Europe and the Americas.
When not squeezing a protesting box, Calvaleigh is squeezing complaining muscles as a massage therapist. She lives in a big, spooky, old house on the prairie with her excellent boyfriend,
two obnoxious dogs, a cat, 17 chickens, and an awful lot of bees; where she creates mixed-media visual art, grows too many vegetables, and enjoys recreational fermentation.

CD track 08: “Love tchat” — Trio amnésique

From the streets of Mexico to the streets of Québec, Kata plays at the square, plays in the bars, plays in the backyards, plays in her head.

Since 2022 she plays with the Trio Amnésique, creating vibrant and naughty compositions accompanied by the marvelous cello of Juliette Malgrange and the handpan and percussion of Pierre-Olivier Bolduc. Come see them in Montreal!

MAY
Susan Hwang
susanhwanglalala.com

CD track 13: “Exactly” – Susan Hwang

Susan Hwang tells stories and makes collapsible things like songs and times. She plays accordion, janggu (Korean drum) and piano, but physical objects she can’t play, wear or eat intimidate her.
She’s the founder/producer of the international, literature-inspired arts non-profit, The Bushwick Book Club. Not a great vacationer, she leaves New York City for theater and with bands like The Debutante Hour (w/ Mia Pixley & Maria Sonevytsky), Lusterlit (w/ Charlie Nieland–nonstop songs about books) and Soozee Hwang and The Relastics (neo-soul originals).

Susan plays accordions because they’re lighter than pianos (barely) and drums because it’s healthy for a girl to hit things.

Band camp 5centcoffee

CD track 11: “Seeds” – 5 Cent Coffee – Heidi Wohlwend

Doodles, Spitshine, and Slick are 5 Cent Coffee, a trio branding themselves as neo-skiffle junkyard blues. They’ve been called the Bay Area’s premier post-modern jug band. They specialize in performing original songs set in the American tradition of traveling circuses and rail-riders down on their luck. With wailing vocals and accordions moaning, the plink of ukulele, banjo, and growling stand-up bass, stir in some Tom Waits, sprinkle in some percussive chain, washboard, and kazoo; that’s the dusty magic of 5 Cent Coffee.

AUGUST
Jet Black Pearl
jetblackpearl.com

CD track 07: “Orphan Dream ” – Jet Black Pearl

Hailing from The Netherlands, the untamed and inimitable Jet Black Pearl spent many years in the south of France before settling in Portland, Oregon in 2014.

Smartly wacky, her songs in Dutch, English and French are a mad hatter’s European party with a funky attitude. She has performed in big tops, house boats, prisons, theaters, castles and ruins all over the world.

This ethno-folk musical project takes the sound of the popular Campania tradition (characterized by the strong presence of frame drums) and blends it with different genres from pop to rock.

CD track 10: “East Van Requiem” – Melody Jane

A “mad sugar-butch” from the colonial corner of East Vancouver, Canada, Melody Jane wrote this song on a gray, cloudy day to remember the community that helped her get this far in her life.
While you listen, take a moment to remember your community, wherever they may be.
